Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) Cyberinfrastructure (CI)
Overview
The Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) Cyberinfrastructure (CI) is a program that focuses the science,
technology, education and outreach of an emerging network of science driven ocean observing systems.
Building on the heritage of the ship-based expeditionary era of the last century, oceanography is commencing
a new phase in which research scientists increasingly seek continuous interaction with the ocean environment
to adaptively observe the earth-ocean-atmosphere system.
The OOI:Ocean Observatories Initiative
The OOI is an outgrowth of several years of community-wide scientific planning efforts, both nationally and internationally.
OOI builds upon recent technological advances, experience with existing observatories, and is underpinned by several successful
pilot and testbed projects.
The infrastructure provided to research scientists through the OOI will include the cables, buoys, deployment platforms, moorings and junction boxes,
required for power and two-way data communication to a wide variety of sensors at the sea surface, in the water column, and at or beneath the seafloor.
The initiative also includes components such as unified project management, data dissemination and archiving, and education and outreach activities essential
to the long-term success of ocean observatory science.
As these efforts mature, the research-focused observatories enabled by the OOI will be networked, becoming an integral part of the proposed Integrated and Sustained
Ocean Observing System (IOOS: www.ocean.us) IOOS is an operationally-focused national system and in turn will be a key and enabling U.S. contribution to the international
Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) and the Global Earth Observing System of Systems (GEOSS: www.earthobservations.org).
