Since 1857, moderate-sized earthquakes have been occurring at regular intervals in the Parkfield region of the San Andreas Fault. The first recorded Parkfield quake, which occurred in 1857, led to a ~20-year cycle of recurring quakes. Current data suggests the idea that all six moderate-sized earthquakes may have been characteristic due to the fact that they all ruptured in the same fault region of Parkfield, CA. These characteristic earthquakes led to a research project called the Parkfield Experiment. This visualization shows one month of earthquake activity of the Parkfield region from September 28th, 2004 (the day of the M6 2004 event) to October 28th 2004, color-coded according to hours, days, and weeks after the Parkfield mainshock: Blue (1 hour after mainshock), Purple (3 hours after mainshock), Pink (2 days after the mainshock), Red (3 days after the mainshock), Orange (4 days after the mainshock), Yellow (5 days after the mainshock), Green (6 days after the mainshock), Turquoise (2 weeks after the mainshock), Gray (3 weeks after the mainshock), and White (4 weeks after the mainshock).
