Since 1857, moderate-sized earthquakes have been occurring at regular intervals in the Parkfield region of the San Andreas Fault. The first recorded Parkfield quake, which occurred in 1857, led to a ~20-year cycle of recurring quakes. Current data suggests the idea that all six moderate-sized earthquakes may have been characteristic due to the fact that they all ruptured in the same fault region of Parkfield, CA. These characteristic earthquakes led to a research project called the Parkfield Experiment. This visualization shows all of the recorded Parkfield earthquakes from the 2004 event to the present, color-coded according to magnitude: Green (M1-3), Yellow (M3-5), and Red (M5-6).
